Chicago Catholic Blue

Catholic Blue has a three-way tie at the top.... Mount Carmel, Loyola and St. Rita

Loyola 19, St. Rita 31
Friday night St. Rita topped top-ranked Loyola and should catapult their spot in the 7A playoffs, as they won 31-19. Mr. Tommy Mister ran for four scores in the win including runs for 49 and 60 yards.

"I've said all year long that if we can score 28 points, I don't think anyone can beat us," Mister said. "Finishing 8-1 instead of 7-2 is huge, too. Hopefully our playoff journey will be a little easier now."

The Mustangs took an early 24-7 halftime lead, but the Ramblers would start the second half with a quick score and narrowed the lead to 11 with a 77-yard pass from Jack Penn to Fran O'Malley (3 catches, 90 yards, 1 TD), but after this, their offense was halted.

"It's an empty feeling; tonight we just came out flat," Penn said. "It wasn't fun watching them beat us and it will definitely motivate us. We know we're not invincible now."

Penn finished the game going 19-for-36, 199 yards, 3 TDs. Teammate and workhorse, Julius Holley, finished with 13 carries, 50 yards.

This loss ends Loyola's 14 straight wins in the Catholic Blue. It was the longest such winning streak within the conference in at least 20 years.

Mount Carmel 59, Leo 13

Brother Rice 20, Providence Catholic 28

Southwest Suburban Blue

Bolingbrook 35, Sandburg 6
Quincy Woods scored three touchdowns and the Raiders defense was dominant. Bolingbrook, which qualified for the playoffs for the 22nd straight season, improved to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the SouthWest Suburban Blue. Sandburg fell to 5-4, 4-3, but the Eagles should have enough points for an at-large bid, their sixth straight and 26th in the past 30 years.

“Our defense is great. We know they’re a big part of our game. If they play well, we can’t be beat.”— Woods

Joliet Catholic 36, Benet 0
The clash of Joliet Catholic and Benet promised an electrifying showdown contrasting the running game of the Hilltoppers against the Redwings’ big-play passing attack.

Joliet Catholic dominated every number that counted. Benet never had a chance.
Despite playing a little more than a half, Mike Ivlow put an exclamation point on his remarkable season, scoring three touchdowns and gaining 141 yards on 25 carries to surpass the 2,000-yard figure for the season. Ivlow has rushed for 2,041 yards through nine games.

“Benet’s got a great defense and they didn’t give up the big play, but we got those five yards at a time and that just let us chew up the clock,” Ivlow said. “We have five excellent running backs and a line we call the big behemoths and they just opened the holes.”

Richards 25, Eisenhower 17
Richards come back and wins 25-17 against Eisenhower Friday night.

Eisenhower was looking to grab a 20-6 lead on a 45-yard field goal by Josue Leal who earlier had converted a 48-yard attempt. Instead the Bulldogs blocked the kick and Savon Robinson scooped it up and sprinted down the left sideline for a 55-yard touchdown return. That score cut the Cardinals lead to 17-12 and put momentum squarely with the Bulldogs near the seven minute mark of the third quarter.

Hasan Muhammad-Rogers threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns including the go-ahead 10-yard score to Dedrick Shannon late in the third quarter.

"Savon gave us the jolt we needed with that play. I thought we came out flat and didn’t play very well in the first half." – Richards coach Tony Sheehan

T.F. South 39, Lemont 6
T.F. South punched its ticket to the state playoffs with an imperative 39-6 victory over Lemont in South Suburban Blue play. The Rebels scored touchdowns on their first two possessions after an interception and blocked punt started both drives in their red zone.

SATURDAY GAMES

Crete-Monee 27, Rich Central  26 OT

Crete-Monee plays the roll of spoiler against undefeated Rich Central Saturday afternoon, as they earned their sixth consecutive conference championship with a 27-26 victory.

A game like this would require overtime, of course, but it was a failed two-point conversion attempt by the Olympians that seals the victory.

The Warriors and Olympians traded touchdowns in overtime. The difference, however, was that Crete-Monee scored first and converted the extra-point kick for a 27-20 lead.

The Olympians followed with a touchdown and, faced with the decision to go for the tie and force a second overtime, or attempt a two-point conversion and nail down the win, Olympians coach Terrell Alexander chose to go for it all.

Running back Ahmad McClellan ran into a wall of Warriors defenders at the three-yard line, igniting a wild celebration as Crete-Monee survived.

"We had to fight for this win," Crete-Monee linebacker Nyles Morgan said. "We had some guys step up."

Everything early seem to go the way of the Olympians (8-1, 4-1), as they jumped out to a 20-6 lead going into the fourth quarter. Just 16 seconds into the game, QB Frank Douglas fumbled and Iyenoma Ogbomoh scooped up the ball and raced 30 yards for the touchdown and 6-0 lead. The Olympians added a 21-yard touchdown pass by Michael Hoover to Breon Glass for a 12-0 advantage after one quarter. Crete responded when Douglas found Kevon Love on an 11-yard touchdown toss with 38 seconds remaining in the first half to trim the deficit to 12-6.

With 8:10 remaining in regulation, Douglas scored on a one-yard touchdown run which closed the gap to 20-12 . The extra-point was blocked.

Crete got the ball back and deep-down in the Olympian redzone, including a late pass-interference flag. The Olympians defense stood strong and aggressive and forced the Warriors to turn the ball over on downs with 3:18 left.

The Olympians were able to move the ball and run some clock but they turned teh ball over and the Warriors recovered with 1:37 to go in regulation. This turnover proved to be costly eventually led to a three-yard touchdown run by the Warriors' Trevon Smith with 47 seconds remaining. Crete-Monee still had to convert its two-point try, which it did on a Douglas to Clint Ratkovich pass, tying the game 20-20.

"We've been in situations like this before and we found a way to win," Crete-Monee coach John Konecki said. "We've been doing it all year."

The momentum pendulum began to swing towards the visitors.

The conference championship was Crete-Monee's sixth in a row, dating back to 2008 when it competed in the old SICA South. The win also extended the Warriors' conference winning streak to 32 games. Crete (8-1, 5-0) hasn't lost a conference game since Week 7 of the 2007 season to Rich East.

"It's a tough loss for the kids," Olympians coach Terrell Alexander said. "The good thing is we have another opportunity (playoffs) to learn from this."
