Tough conference match-up... two undefeated teams... one won - visiting Bolingbrook (7-0-, 5-0) snagged an overtime victory over Homewood-Flossmoor 31-24 Friday night.

The Raiders rallied from a 14-point deficit including a fumble recovery for a touchdown by C.J. Clark.

"We just needed to regroup," said Clark, who scooped up a fumble caused by a ferocious Bernard Flowers sack to cut Homewood-Flossmoor's lead to 21-16 early in the third quarter. "We got too excited in the first half. We were caught up in the emotion of the game, two undefeated teams. That wasn't us. That second half, that is Bolingbrook defense."

Senior running back Jaden Huff (16 carries, 104 yards, 2 TDs) scored the tying and winning points, catching a 2-point conversion pass to tie it at 24 midway through the fourth quarter and putting the Raiders (7-0, 5-0) ahead with a 3-yard run in overtime.

Homewood-Flossmoor (6-1, 4-1) gained 9 yards on an Isaac Cutrara (157 yards passing, 1 TD) completion on its first overtime play, but Bolingbrook fittingly pushed the Vikings back on the next three to secure the victory and claim first place in the Southwest Suburban Blue.

"We hung in there, just kept at it and figured out what we could get on them," Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow said. "When it came down to it at the end it was our old mid-line and veer-option plays.

Bolingbrook's Quincy Woods finished the game with 15 carries, 72 yards, 1 TD.

“It’s a big win, but there’s more to come,” said Woods after the game.

Crete-Monee 12, Bloom 7

Crete-Monee (6-1, 3-0) survived Bloom's upset bid in a sloppy game that had 21 penalties called, but the Warrior hold on for a 12-7 win. Trevon Smith had 73 rushing yards on 12 carries, including the go-ahead touchdown run.

Bloom (4-3, 2-2) scored late in the second quarter on a Justus Brantley 59-yard touchdown scamper but could muster no more offense. The Blazing Trojans need one win over the season's final two weeks to be eligible for the IHSA playoffs.

"The idea is 'Never break.' We stopped Bloom every time, and I'm very proud of my team. We're fighters to the end, and the defense held strong," said Crete linebacker Nyles Morgan.

Evergreen 21, Eisenhower 13

Jacquet McClendon caught two first-quarter touchdown passes from Sean Ryan — including a 47-yard grab over the shoulder — as Evergreen Park hung on for a 21-13 victory Friday against Eisenhower to remain unbeaten and atop the conference.

Eisenhower rallied with scores from T.J. Skelton and Michael Morrison to make it a one possession contest before Evergreen Park standout Jaquet McClendon grabbed the game-clinching interception with less than a minute to go as the Mustangs hung on for a 21-13 victory to remain atop the South Suburban Red standings.

“First and foremost, we need to learn how to finish games before we head into the playoffs,” McClendon said. “But we never give up, and that’s a great tribute to our team.”

A major reason for the Mustangs’ unblemished record is their stout defensive front. Led by James Jackson, Tremane Holt, Brian Pall and linebacker Brent Bogusz, the Mustangs had 11 tackles for loss.

“It’s hard work and dedication week to week,” Jackson said. “We talked about keeping their backs from hitting the outside. Contain.”

Loyola 48, De La Salle 0

After a big Catholic Blue win over previously top-ranked Mount Carmel, the Ramblers kept their focus and remained undefeated with an easy 48-0 win over De La Salle.

DJ Melsheimer threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, finishing the day 16-of-22 with 212 yards while adding another 41 from the ground in a little under three quarters of play. His main target was Owen Buscaglia (eight catches, 109 yards, touchdown).

Notre Dame 45, Marist 35

Despite seemingly not having an answer for quarterback Jack Donegan, junior receiver Flynn Nagel, receiver Nic Weishar and the Marist offense all night long, Notre Dame prevailed in a thriller 45-35 Friday in Niles. The Dons (6-1 overall, 3-1 ESCC) led the entire night, but the RedHawks (4-3, 3-2) clawed their way back in it with a 49-yard touchdown throw from Donegan, a senior, that hit senior wide receiver Mark Ferguson perfectly in stride. That was followed by a two-point conversion laser that Ferguson took just inside the pylon to draw his team within 31-28 with 8:09 remaining in the fourth quarter. After a Chris James rushing touchdown, a diving catch by Weishar, a senior, drew Marist within three again with three and half minutes remaining. However, another James score and a pick by senior Pat Cravens sealed the Dons’ victory.

SATURDAY GAMES

Rich South 0, Rich Central 34

Things started off slow for both teams until late in the first quarter when Central capitalized, with quarterback Michael Hoover (8-for-16, 104 yards) hitting Jordan Fuqua six plays later for an 11-yard touchdown reception with 45 seconds left in the first quarter. The Olympians went up 7-0 and never looked back. The Olympians go on to a 34-0 victory.

Hoover threw (1-4 yards, TD) and ran (86 yards, TD), and Ahmad McClellan added 116 yards rushing and 3 TDs for Central (7-0, 3-0).

“We keep winning, and the offensive line keeps blocking for us. We wanted to come out and score quickly. Now, we just have to keep working hard at practice.” — Hoover

The Olympians are trying to keep pace with last years' state champ Crete-Monee who they will face in two weeks.
