GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hillcrest 56, Rich South 48
Hillcrest gets its revenge and hold off Rich South to advance 56-48...

Hillcrest seemed in control the entire contest until the fourth period when their cross-town foe, Rich South, rallied back cutting a 16-point deficit to only five with 2:40 left to play.

Down the stretch, the Lady Stars dug deep and battled for all of the loose balls, their aggressive pressing defense and quick baskets,  including a big steal by Tierra Webb, who came up with a steal then buried a three-pointer, making the score 51-46.

But Rich South scored just two points the rest of the way. A big basket to seal the victory was made by Joshulyn Shepard (9 points), who scored inside for a 54-46 lead with 68 seconds to go.

Hawks regained their composure just in time, though, getting key defensive stops late and knocking down free throws to seal a 56-48 win in Park Forest at the Class 3A Rich East Regional final, 56-48.

Tanzania Sherrill scored 16 points and Shayla Joyner had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Hawks (23-4).

Dasia Evans (17 points, 13 rebounds) and Tierra Webb (14 points) paced Rich South, which finished 17-10.

“We waited 371 days for this to make up for them beating us in the regional final last year,” coach John Maniatis said. “It was a long wait.”

Hillcrest will meet the winner of Friday’s Bishop McNamara-Peotone game in the Lincoln-Way West Sectional semifinals.
