Seton
Sting Stung by Leo Lions
RICHTON PARK
- Talk about a statement game… In
fact, this game was bill the battle of the catholic league even though it
took place on a public league floor. Most of the players on both teams have
played with their opponents on this afternoon so their were no secret plays
or lack of knowledge. But one thing for sure, both teams wanted to be
aggressive early.
From the tip-off, this game lived up to its
billing.
Each team traded baskets and made a statement run. Both teams also made
statement responses. The Sting had the lead with five minutes left to play
in the game when 5' 10" senior guard, James Pointer, led the Lions on an 11
- 2 run. “I just snuck in under the basket,” Pointer said. “I’m little so
they don’t notice me. I slipped in wherever I could find space and then just
jumped as high as I could.”
Pointer finished the game with 20 points and
10 rebounds.
That kind of effort was everywhere for the Lions, who out rebounded Seton
46-36 despite a height disadvantage at every position.
Furthermore, Pointer has a list at home of
all the guards in the area that have received more publicity than him. “I
want to go against all of them and beat them. And now I can cross DJ Cooper
[Seton senior guard] off my list. Everyone thought they were all this team
was," said Pointer after the game. "We prove that wrong every game we win”
Leo is now a perfect 12-0 on the season, a
fact Leo coach Noah Cannon credits to something that happened well over a
year ago. “These kids are still trying to prove that they are more than the
two guys who transferred last year,” Cannon said after the game. “We wanted
it more. We don’t plan on losing this year.”
Senior Darien Johnson also stepped up big for
Leo scoring 13 points, 6 rebounds and 2 perfectly timed blocks coming down
the stretch for the Lions.
Seton (11 - 2) was led by Jordan Walker who
finished the game with a double-double - 17 points and 10 rebounds.
This comeback victory for Leo demonstrated to lots of fans and media alike
that they are for real and are playing with a wind underneath their
sneakers, and a ton of motivation this season.
Final score 65-61 in the quarterfinals of the
Big Dipper tournament at Rich South.
