HILLCREST HOLIDAY CHAMPIONSHIP

COUNTRY CLUB HILLS - Hillcrest High School was the place to be Monday Night December 29th. After one day of rest, the final showdown was heated at the Hillcrest Holiday tournament championship where Sun-times Ranked No. 1 Marian Catholic Spartans played the Host, No. 2 Ranked Hillcrest Lady Hawks for the championship.

The first quarter had the crowds on their feet with excitement as the Lady Hawks lead by Uniquah Hampton with 7 points, went toe to toe with Spartans super shooters Aubrey Sparrey scoring 8pts and 3 pointers by Kaila Turner and Emily Kobel. The quarter closed 22-19, with the Spartans leading the Hawks by only 3 points.

The Spartans started to go to work on the Hawks to increase their lead in the second quarter, closing the half at 42-30.

Hillcrest with the help of 6 pts from Kristin Marshall and 3 pointers from Uniquah Hampton and Juanita Robinson, came back for another run in the third quarter, outscoring the Marian’s 16-8 in the quarter’s final 3:49. The Lady Hawks cut Spartans lead to 61-55 by the end of the third.

The Spartans answered with a 14-2 run midway through the fourth quarter and took a 77-61 lead. The Spartans lead by Kaila Turner (23 Points) , Jasmine Mathews and Simone Law (17pts), pulled the game away scoring 22 points in the 4th.

Coach Anne Basic said after the game “we came into this tournament to play the best we could play.” And indeed they did. After 3 years, Marion Catholic clinched the title with an 88-70 win over the host Hawks. They finished 2nd the past two seasons losing to the tournament champion Marist. Kaila Turner, future player for

Notre Dame, scored a game-high 23 points for Marian Catholic and was named tournament MVP. “This is huge motivation for us for the rest of the season,” Turner said. “We knew Hillcrest would have a huge crowd and we knew it was important to contain their guards and stop them from attacking the basket.”

Hillcrest advanced to the title game for the first time since 2001, when the Hawks finished second to Marian Catholic. Hillcrest hasn’t won its own tournament since 2000.

Uniquah Hampton and Kristin Marshall both scored 16 points for Hillcrest. Hampton mentioned that “turnovers” put them behind early and the Lady Hawks “will build from this game into the season.”

Again, congratulations to Marion Catholic Spartans and all of the teams that competed in this years' Hillcrest Holiday Tournament.

The Spartans play at St. Louis - St. Joseph Academy at 2:30pm January 3, 2009, while the Lady Hawks won’t play their next game until January 8th against Tinley Park.
