Hillcrest swagger almost cost them...

HILLCREST - Bowen showed up to the south suburbs with a little swagger, as they defeat Washington the night before 69 - 64 in the play-in game.

On the other side of the ball, Hillcrest came in the game confident since they defeated Richards to win the South Suburban Conference Tournament championship game Friday. And early on their confidence got the best of them. Basically they came out flat while Bowen pickup right where they left off Monday night. The Boilermakers attacked fast and with lots of finesse taking a 15-6 lead to start the game.

But in the second period, Travis Scott, Eric Gaines and Nick Oden put together a 1-2-3 punch that Bowen couldn't seem to stop. "We were big-headed," Gaines recognized after the game. "We thought that after the Richards game that we were big and bad because

we beat a tough team. I think we came out too lazy."

Scott finished the game with 19 points, Gaines 17 (all in the first half), and Oden 15.

"Our team is very balanced," said coach Don Houston. "If one person isn't having a good game someone else is going to step up. Someone usually steps up; it's just a matter of who. But if we have a game where no one steps up, then we're going to have problems."

Final score... Hillcrest 85 - Bowen 61
