| Up next was an offensive explosive game between the Wolverine's and the Caravan. This was a very emotional game for the Caravan family. First, they had to play this event without Coach Lenti who is serving a self-imposed 2-game suspension. The team was coached by his brother David. Then, early on Friday, word began to spread that senior Steve Bajenski, a second baseman on the school's baseball team, succumbed to his battle with a heart condition. He had been in a coma since having surgery July 31. He died Friday morning at Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn. Senior Milton Greer, who played with Bajenski, shared his thoughts to say "Steve was a good friend, a good teammate, one of the best baseball players I've ever seen. I came out and scored a couple touchdowns for him. Rest in peace, Steve." |
| Simeon stood tall against the strength of Mt. Carmel and kept clawing back and forth to remain competitive on the evening. The game seem winnable when junior Horatio Banks scored on a short touchdown run which got the score to 39-27 with over 7-minutes left in the third quarter. But the Caravan proved to have more weapons and a moral victory wasn't good enough for the Wolverines. "We should have won," said sophomore phenom Robert Gregory, who threw a pair of touchdown passes. "You could say they are the best team on our schedule, but I think we are the best team. We'll see them again in the 8A playoffs and give them a better run for their money." |
Behind Division I football prospect, Greer, gave the Caravan the lead for good on an 86-yard kickoff return in the first quarter. Then he returned an ensuing kickoff of over 80 yards for a touchdown that put the Caravan ahead for good.
|
Again, the Wolverines were not done and
began to fight back with a 16-yard pass from Gregory to senior wide
receiver Jasper Golden. Right after this score, the Caravan struck
back with a 40-yard run. The Wolverines got a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Darius Scott and the Caravan scored on a 65-yard pass from Sujka to Michael Scott to go to the break up 39-21. |
In the second half, Simeon scored first on an eight-yard run by Horatio Banks, but the Caravan answered on a 68-yard return of a fumble recovered by Markell Brown and Greer ended the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 47-yard scoring run.
Now for
dessert....
The Mustangs take on the Crusaders. This game got off quick with
three first-half touchdowns by quarterback DeRon Brown. "I think that my
team made the four touchdowns possible," Brown said. "It sends a signal to
the state. We came out and played the way we practiced." Asked if this
sends a signal to the rest of the Public League, Brown responded: "It sends
a signal to the state. State champions."
