BOYS BASKETBALL

Marian Catholic 72, St. Viator 56
Whew... Marian Catholic got passed conference foe St. Viator Friday night with a 72-56 win behind the play of T.J. Parham and Kentucky-recruit Tyler Ulis.

Parham played BIG in this contest when Ulis acquired two foul early in the second quarter and had to sit for a while. In addition to the foul trouble, Ulis right wrist seemed to cause his some early discomfort. He sprained it durin the Muskegon Shootout in Michigan last weekend, but he did finish with 16 points, 11 assist and five steals.

“T.J. stepped up big,” Ulis said. “They had no reason to put me back in early in the game. I wasn’t frustrated because (Parham) stepped up so big. We were still in the game, going into the second half.”

In the second quarter, the Spartans went on a nice run to end the first half including a BIG time slam by Parham which seem to ignite the team.

“When Tyler gets in foul trouble, coach (Mike Taylor) always emphasizes that somebody else needs to step up,” Parham said. “He always puts pressure on me to step up and play my game the best that I can. I just stepped up and tried to score as many points as I could.

Parham had 16 first-half points, finished with 22.

On the other side of the ball, Drake-bound Ore Arogundade led St. Viator (11-3, 2-1) with 24 points and 10 rebounds. He was constant for the Lions all evening, scoring six points in each period, including his points third quarter, plus seven by Roosevelt Smart (finished with 11), got St. Viator its biggest lead at 45-42. However, Kentucky-recruit Ulis, took over in the fourth quarter, first dishing to Oliver for back-to-back baskets, then driving himself for a layup. He would be responsible for 18 of Marian’s 24 points in the fourth period, either by scoring or getting an assist.

Smart scored 11 points.
