coming Christmas 2013

There are less than 15 days and until the 2013 Illinois High School Kickoff begins and the road to Dekalb, IL (Northern Illinois University) host location for this seasons State finals.

NOTE: You can view the count down on your site at AmateurSports365.com

Back-to-back-to-back-to-back Class 5A state champion Montini doesn't duck anyone, and that's the case again. The Broncos open at home against Maine South in a matchup of two of the most prolific offenses in Illinois over the past decade or so. Montini will file onto a charter bus the following week and head to East St. Louis to take on a Flyers team full of D-I athletes.

Last season was the best of times (a 42-41 victory in Week 1 against 8A runner-up Glenbard North and a 9-0 regular season) and the worst of times (a first-round loss to Downers Grove North in the 7A playoffs) for Batavia., which will need to bring its "A" game right of the bat with home contests against Glenbard North and Richards.

Moving on, what about some favorites for next season?

Defending Class 8A state champ Mount Carmel will be the consensus No. 1 team. You can get on with your lives now.

Defending Class 7A state champs Glenbard West reloads, but Lake Zurich brings back a ton. A dark horse? Look no further than Downers Grove North, which is always battle-tested and benefits from its 8A-sized West Suburban Silver schedule. And never count out Rockford Boylan.

Crete-Monee and the rest in Class 6A? Or Lemont? I have a name for you — East St. Louis. The Flyers, who have for years petitioned to play up in Class 7A despite having a mid-sized 6A enrollment, will not petition this year. The Flyers most likely will be in 6A come playoff time, thus making them an instant contender.

Montini Catholic, Joliet Catholic, Sacred Heart Griffin and Kaneland are teams to watch in Class 5A. The Knights have a terrific core of veteran starters, many of whom have played on the varsity level since their sophomore year, led by standout senior quarterback Drew David.

See y'all in a few days....
