Week 2 off with the elements

ASNN365 - Week 2, in high school football, got started Thursday with Mother Nature playing a huge roll in one contest. Thursday evening CVS faced King over at Gately and Mother Nature played a significant role in the outcome.

FRIDAY
Rich South 26, Oak Lawn 21
The Stars began this game without their starting quarterback, Parish Voss, who is injured, so backup Brandon Kelly stepped in. Kelly got things started early with a touchdown to his cousin Iman Kelly for 40 yards. Oak Lawn wasn't able to answer on their first possession resulting in a blocked punt which then set up a 15 yard touchdown run by Bryon Moore. Moore finished the contest with 146 yards on 31 carries with three touchdowns. "This is the greatest feeling I've ever had," said Rich South running back Byron Moore, who finished with three touchdowns and 155 yards on 30 carries. "Getting that losing streak off our back is an amazing feeling."

The Stars took an early lead of 20-0 at the end of the first.

"Captured the Art of Sport in Motion"

The Spartans answered right before the half with a touchdown pass from Mike Emanualson to Ariam Belk for 24 yards and to Tom Madsen for 13 making the score 20-14 at half time. Emanualson finished the game 17-of-28 for 188 yards and 3 TDs.

Moore scored once more in the fourth quarter making the score 26-14, and the Spartans responded on a tipped ball that fell into the hands of Colin Altenburg who galloped down the field for a 48-yard touchdown with just under three minutes to go.

The Stars defense stepped up down the stretch recording two consecutive sacks which stopped the Spartans from a late rally.

Stars defensive line sacked Emanualson 13 times in the game including 3 sacks by Ricky Larkin (5 solo tackles and a block punt).

De La Salle 33, Hales 13
Quarterback Juwan Martin rushed for 121 yards, scored on a 22-yard run and completed two touchdown passes for De La Salle (2-0, 2-0). Alphonso Johnson also ran the ball 23 times for 116 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, safety Brandon Wright returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown.

Andrew 24, Lincoln-Way Central 14
Kevin O'Neal was 9-for-11 for 127 yards and three touchdowns to lead Andrew (1-1). Kyle Duckworth caught two of O'Neal's passes for scores.

Oak Forest 25, Rich Central 23

Coming into this game.... Olympians have lost 4 straight games against the Bengals. Running back Matt Barry for the Bengals knew there were two important moments in his team's 25-23 victory Friday night. "The end of the first half and the beginning of the second half," said Barry, who carried the football 22 times for 135 yards and one touchdown.

After stopping Rich Central to start the second half, Oak Forest proceeded to chew up eight minutes off the clock over the next 14 plays, resulting in a booming 45-yard field goal by Mike Williams for an 18-15 lead with 1:43 left in the third quarter.

"It's great to kick with the wind at your back," said Williams, one of the area's best at his position and owner of eight field goals in 2009.

The Olympians made things interesting at the end when Devonte Black, who finished the contest 15-of-29 for 216 yards, hooked up with Lawrence Nettles for a 14-yard score with 27 seconds left. Black added a 2-point conversion pass to Darnell Fletcher.

Rich Central opened the scoring at 8:09 of the first quarter on a 58-yard run by Aaron Morris to make it 7-0.

After Coleman tallied on a 15-yard run to help create a 7-7 tie, Rich Central went ahead 15-7 when Black first threw 36 yards to Fletcher for six points, then added two more on a conversion toss to Ramone Hankle.

The Bengals were too much down the stretch and continued their margin of victory over the Olympians.

T.F. South 35, Collins 12
Kenny Jackson, Jermaine Jones, Ben Jones and Geo Canty each had a rushing touchdown for T.F. South (2-0). Jackson also caught a pass for a score.

THURSDAY
But this game got off with a double-dose of WOW!!! The Cavaliers Darius Smith returned the opening kickoff 78 yards to the house. But not to be outdone, King's Brandon James imitated what just took place seconds before. James returned his opening kick 82 yards untouched to the house for the Jaguars. "I was nervous at first,” James said, “because the guy in front of me dropped the ball and I thought, ’What’s he’s doing?’ I saw the ball and got a nice block and I was able to get to the open."

From here, Jaguars erupted for four unanswered touchdowns in their 32-6 victory. The game was called with 7:27 to play in the third quarter after the fourth lightning strike.

The Cavaliers (1-1) could generate little if any offense. They were held to two yards offense in the first half and finished with -6 total yards.
