Senior phenom from the Southland (or south suburbs of Chicago) Donald Moore was the commander-in-chief on the floor of this Supersectional contest between Bloom (28-3) and Edwardsville, as the Blazing Trojans won 53-41, Tuesday at the Class 4A Illinois State Supersectional at Redbird Arena.

Moore knocked down 15 points, 6 boards and 5 assists. his running mate, Johnny Griffin, added 13 points in the victory.

Moore dominated the game while taking only six shots. Eight of his 15 points came at the line. He added five assists and set up teammates several other times for what became free-throw opportunities.

The Blazing Trojans simply frustrated the offense of Edwardsville and prevented them from gaining any control or offensive sets.

The closest the Tigers came was eight — 49-41 — with 24.9 seconds left. After scoring seven in each of the first three quarters, the Tigers' 20 in the fourth did little but make Edwardsville (24-6) the first postseason opponent to eclipse the 40 mark against Bloom.

"That's pretty much what we've been doing all season — hanging our hats on our defense," Bloom coach Jasper Williams said. "We're only going eight deep right now, and those eight pretty much controlled the game."

Tre Harris and Garrett Covington each scored 16 points for Edwardsville.

This is Blooms first state trip downstate since 2000 when under Gary Meyer of the Blazing Trojans lost in the Class AA quarterfinals. The Blazing Trojans will meet the top-ranked Wolverines at 8:15 p.m. Friday in the second 4A semifinal contest.

When asked about the trip downstate, Moore said "It's special."

Coach Williams added "it means a lot to our district and our community. We'll show up. We'll play Bloom basketball."

Bloom will ride its defense all the way to Peoria and a date with No. 1 Simeon.
