BOYS BASKETBALL
CLASS 2A CHAMPIONSHIP
Hales 61, Murphyboro 47
The Spartans knocked off number #1 Murphysboro with a 61-47 victory in the Class 2A finals Saturday night at Carver Arena in Peoria. Aaric Armstead led the way knocking down 18 points, followed by New York transfer Eddie Alcantara, who added 15 points. And not too far behind is brother Aaron (Armstead) who contributed 12 to help Hales beat the undefeated Red Devils.
"We felt like we should have won it last year, so to come back down again and win it is a feeling I can't describe," Aaron Armstead said. "I've been waiting four years for this, and I'm trying not to cry in front of cameras. I'll wait until I get to the locker room for that.

This is Hales' second state title (2003) and the third time the program emerged from the final victorious. Hales was stripped of its 2005 title because the school was not recognized as an approved school by the Illinois State Board of Education. The Spartans finished third last year.
