Its Game Time!!! Bears host the Vipers on Matteson’s New Football Field

On Sunday, August 8, 2011, the Matteson Bears hosted the Indiana’s Hessville Vipers first game ever on the brand new Matteson Community Center’s football field. In addition, Mother Nature blessed everyone with a beautiful day despite the early threats of rain.

Before the first game, the Village of Matteson administration, PARC staff, the Bears and Vipers coaches, players and fans all gathered on the 50 yard line for a prayer to bless the field.

We chatted with Matteson Bears President Hubert Evans, who gave special thanks to Matteson’s Mayor Ashmore, the Trustees, Village Administrator Brian Mitchell, the Parks & Recreation, Management and Staff for working hard to make sure the field was ready for the long anticipated kick off game. “We’ve been waiting a long time for this,” Evans stated. “Matteson has awesome football fans and we are glad that our village finally has its own field for residents to enjoy. The Bears Organization is very thankful for the opportunity to use the field today and to be the first to have played on it.”

Then it was time to play ball. This was the first full contact game for both teams. For the first 3 games (Widget, Pee-Wee and Jr. Varsity), the Bears were able to control the tempo and the scores 20-6, 21-7 and 14-0 respectively. Now in the grand finale of the day, the Varsity Game, that was a different story. The Vipers showed their fangs and inserted their venom in to the Bears disabling them from start to finish and captured a 42-0 win.

The one thing that was very noticeable on this day was the wonderful comradery between the teams and fans. Even the highly competitive Matteson Bear Cheerleaders after “putting it down” on the field and the sidelines, was very gracious to the new Viper Cheer Squads and presented each team with a customary cheer gift. Both squads cheered and applauded each other’s half time performance. It was truly a wonderful day and we all are looking forward to the season.

Last but not least, we all know you can’t have a fun Bear game without our beloved “Spirit Man”. He entertained the fans with his awesome kick, jumps and fanfare in a manner that only Spirit Man can.
