I wrote the subject line in order to pose the question and encourage you to have an open and honest conversation with your parent(s) about their finances and insurance. If you are 40 years old and older, more than likely your parents are 60 and older, so I am encouraging you to sit down and talk about where they are with their finances - NOW!

If they do not want to talk about the specifics of their finances, try (at a minimum) to have a conversation about life insurance. Find out if they have any life insurance, how much the policy(s) are for, and where the policies are (in a shoebox, safe deposit box etc.)?

I have engaged 3 families in the last week with a parent(s) aged 60 and older (in one instance a parent that is 80 years old) that have recently discovered that they DO NOT have any life insurance. It is important that everyone in your family obtain life insurance.

If you have a parent that is age 65 and older and they do not have any life insurance, you can obtain a final expense policy which can be used for funeral/burial expenses. It is difficult to think about the passing of a family member, but it is also difficult to deal with the passing of a parent and then try to figure out where the money will come from for a funeral and to pay off any of their debts if there is no life insurance; you can avoid this added stress during the time of bereavement, please sit down and have a conversation with your family. I hear all the time, "I don't have any money for insurance, we are in a recession"... and I say, "Can you or your family afford not to have any insurance?"

Call me and I will sit down with you and your family and we can discuss your options.

Please take the advice from someone (ME) that knows first hand about the passing of parent (my mother) 1. an average funeral costs $12000, 2. a great deal of stress during the time of grief is alleviated when the money is there to take care of expenses associated with someone passing away 3. money will not bring your parent(s) back, but it can be used to invest in the future for yourself and/or your children.

If you talk to your parent(s) and you discover that they have a policy(s) that you or they cannot understand, call me and I will help you to understand the coverage they have or if it is still in force. Some older people may have obtained policies several years ago (in the 1950's or 1960's) with companies that may no longer be in business. I cannot stress enough that if you haven't had a conversation regarding this issue with your family, please do so TODAY! I can help!

Until next time...as always be safe, use wisdom.

Regards,
