Many people can attest, NOT carrying your Social Security card around with you is ONE of the BEST ways to keep the number out of the hands of potential identity thieves.  Here are some other ways to keep those valuable digits safe: Keep the card in a locked box or safe deposit box. Memorize the number. Don't write it down.

If you feel uncomfortable, suggest an alternative form of identification such as a driver's license or an account number.
